sutherland
Synonymous with silence, stars, icy cold and
since November 2005 the giant telescope, SALT
(Southern African Large Telescope). And this is the small
Karoo town, Sutherland, seismographically indicated as the quietest
place on earth and boasting the coldest average temperature in
South Africa.

Sutherland is also the birthplace of the Louw
poet brothers. Visitors can find out more about NP van Wyk Louw
and WEG Louw and their literature at their house of birth, the
Louw Museum. In addition to The Observatory, approximately
16km outside Sutherland in Fraserburg's direction, Sutherland's
architecture is also worth seeing. The Dutch Reformed Church,
designed by Charles Freeman (also the architect of the Dutch
Reformed Church in Graaff Reinet), dates from the early 1900s.

the Louw Museum, interesting graveyards in the town, 4x4 routes

We would like to make your visit to Die Prokureurshuis
an unforgettable experience and therefore wish to draw your attention
to the following specific information.

Medical information
Although there is not a pharmacy in Sutherland,
there is a doctor. In case of emergency you can contact
the hospital at 023 571 1002.
Banking
There is only a branch of Standard Bank
with its ATM in town. Only a few of the businesses in town
accept credit cards. We strongly recommend that you have
enough cash available for general purchases.
Petrol and diesel
Sutherland has only one petrol station
– literally around the corner from Die Prokureurshuis.
Fuel is available from 08:00 to 17:00 on Mondays to Saturdays
and from 11:30 to 12:30 on Sundays. Please ensure that your
car has sufficient fuel since an after hours fee of R10
will be charged.
Cell phone reception
Sutherland offers cell phone reception
for all the well-known cell phone network suppliers. However,
bear in mind that there is no cell phone reception between
Matjiesfontein and Sutherland. We recommend that you notify
someone when you turn off to Sutherland at Matjiesfontein.
SALT and the observatory
The Observatory is about 16km from town
on the road to Fraserburg. Day tours take place from Mondays
to Saturdays at R20 per person (don’t expect to see
any stars through a telescope during the day!). Night tours
take place on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and Saturdays
and cost R40 per person. All tours are arranged by appointment.
